Welcome to Pit Bull Chat! ... A slat mill is the best for improving wind, getting off winter weight, and creating lean muscle. However, they can be loud and cost anywhere between 600-1400 dollars. A carpet mill is fine for short runs but more anaerobic conditioning. They are also way cheaper, about 300-600.
Looks like he uses some kind of dense beveled acrylic slats with a milled out surface. I'm sure it would cost a fair amount to build these suckers unless you had milling machines and lathes. I've searched designs using inline skate wheels and bearings, tubing, hubs, wood slats and what-not but have never seen such a well built slat mill before.

Mar 22, 2008. #18. For a slat mill, they have roller skate wheels. Usually metal, but newer models may use sythectic wheels to keep the noise down. The carpet mill isn't as easy as it looks. I mad a carpet mill, it cost me a little over a hundred bucks and had to keep making adjustments. Its a little harder to get your dog to run on one verses a slat mill or an electric mill. So your dog might not be into it after your all done making it. I would look into buying one from Grandcarpet mills in grand rapids MI. They have a web site.
Some have so many bells and whistles at some point there is the discussion of 'are we working the dog or are we talking about the mill'...if that makes sens. I saw one a few months ago made by a guy (I think in SC) and he goes by John . The mill was like $750 maybe $800 and worked as good as any mill I have ever seen.
A carpet mill will burn fat depending on the dog up to 4 x as fast, build muscle way faster and after a basic H.I.T. workout two hours while resting will burn more fat than an atual dog running on a slat mill. The problem with people not knowing how to build endurance on a carpet mill is the only reason slat mills still exist!
